Saint John the Evangelist - Masonic Patron

Saint John the Evangelist

The feast day of St John the Evangelist is celebrated on 27 December and Lodges continue to adopt him as their Patron Saint, and hold their Installations in December.

Representations of St John the Evangelist show him with a chalice and serpents in allusion to the cup of sorrow foretold by Jesus.

The Gospel of John, begins:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and darkness comprehended it not.".
As with Freemasonry we see the parallel with the seeking for light.

Saint John the Evangelist is recognized as having been the most devout of Jesus' disciples and in this we also see the fidelity espoused by freemasons.
